Genesie's Journey to Confidence and a Career
December 24, 2024
For many, the years directly after high school are filled with excitement, big dreams, and a world of possibilities. But, for Genesie, the world looked much bleaker.
Genesie was not able to complete high school, amid her battle with severe anxiety and depression. While her peers continued to follow their educational and career goals, Genesie felt little sense of direction. But, a visit to a Goodwill Career and Training Center gave Genesie a clearer path forward.
In May 2023, Genesie was still determined to complete her education. She walked into her local Goodwill in Greenville after learning she could meet one-on-one with a career specialist and get free GED help. That seemingly simple act for many was a monumental step toward overcoming the social anxiety that had held Genesie back for so long.
Genesie quickly enrolled in Goodwill’s program for young adults. In addition to working toward her GED, the program created a safe place for Genesie to further overcome her social challenges. She says interacting with other program participants and Goodwill staff helped her feel included and safe.
With newfound confidence and direction, Genesie set her sights on preparing for her GED test and even landed a job at a local retail store in February of 2024!
In May 2024, a year after first visiting her local Goodwill Career and Training Center, Genesie earned her GED!
Today, Genesie is still a consistent employee at her same job and says her next goal is to attend Greenville Technical College to study Business.
Genesie’s uplifting story shows how perseverance and courage, combined with Goodwill’s free career help, can change the trajectory of someone’s life for good.
