Goodwill Celebrating Upcoming 50th Anniversary with Community Mural Project

January 26, 2023

(Greenville, SC) Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina (GIUMSC) is partnering with community organizations to paint a mural on the side of their Haywood Road headquarters.  The vibrant mural depicts a girl’s dream of a thriving community where differences are valued and people work together to spread goodwill to all. It’s the first project for GIUMSC to celebrate their upcoming 50th anniversary. The 1440 sq. ft. installation will face the new Swamp Rabbit Trail Bridge over Haywood Road and is expected to be completed by mid-February.  An unveiling event will be planned for late February.

Community members, students, and the media are invited to the mural kick-off event on January 28, 2023, 11 a.m., at 115 Haywood Road in Greenville. The event will feature comments by GIUMSC President/CEO Patrick Michaels and Greenville County Schools Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster. Following the ceremony, community members are welcome to stay to paint the mural.

2023 marks the 50th year for GIUMSC in the Upstate and Midlands communities.  The mural project is one of many initiatives planned throughout the year to highlight the organization’s mission to “provide access, information, and resources to help people improve their lives through the power of work.” Founded in 1973 by Lloyd Auten, GIUMSC has committed a half-century to lifting up job seekers and their families.

“Goodwill has been offering a hand up in the Upstate and Midlands for 50 years. This mural represents the hopes and dreams of our community through the power of work and the power of possibility. We are thrilled to showcase this new mural on the side of our headquarters and hopefully inspire others to spread goodwill throughout their lives,” said Pat Michaels, President and CEO of GIUMSC.

Goodwill commissioned the mural with Blank Canvas Mural Company founder, Adam Schrimmer, to highlight the spirit and determination of the Greenville community by depicting people working toward independent, fruitful lives. Blank Canvas Mural Company’s work can be seen in a variety of other murals throughout the Greenville area.
