GOODWILL® EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION; HELPS OVER 13,000 SOUTH CAROLINIANS FIND JOBS
It all starts with just a donation – unused children’s toys, pants that are no longer worn, a floor lamp that no longer has a place. Those donations set in motion Goodwill’s “donation cycle”, being sold in our retail stores and generating revenue that creates jobs in the state of South Carolina. And, through the generosity of our community members, donations helped 13,037 South Carolinians find new jobs during Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina (GIUMSC)’s 2018/2019 fiscal year, a new record for the organization. The fiscal year ran from July 2018 through June 2019.
What does that mean for our communities? GIUMSC provides job training and placement programs with a focus on helping people in our community prepare for, obtain, and be successful in employment. Services include certified career training programs in Retail, Food Service, Nursing, Forklift Operator and Commercial Driver’s License Certifications; resources and assistance at Goodwill Job Connections; and a variety of other employment programs. Individuals are able to achieve financial independence and the community benefits from self-sufficient families and a strong, engaged workforce.
GIUMSC is also proud that this local impact has garnered national attention. In June, Goodwill Industries International announced key results for calendar year 2018. Out of 155 reporting Goodwill organizations across the United States, GIUMSC ranked:
- 1st in the number of people placed into employment per 100,000 people in the service area (this calculation accounts for significant differences in populations served by different Goodwill organizations)
- 2nd in the amount of revenue consumed per person placed (We devote over 93 cents of every dollar spent towards our mission.)
- 4th in total placements (without regard to service area population)
With record low unemployment rates and many communities still struggling with multiple barriers to good-paying jobs, Goodwill Industries of the Upstate/Midlands South Carolina is proud to share that the 13,037 people now employed have the potential to create an economic impact in the community of over $172 million through the wages earned during their first year of employment.
“Every opportunity Goodwill has to provide services and support to help a person become employed is due to the generosity of our communities and the donations they make each and every day,” says Patrick Michaels, President and CEO of GIUMSC. “We work hard to ensure that our donors and communities know that fulfillment of our mission is only possible with a donation - whether it is a shirt, a pair of pants, a computer, or even a car, makes a direct impact on the life of someone right here in our community who is searching for employment.”
Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina helps people become independent through education and training leading to employment.
